Animal Feed Producer

A 1MW ground mounted solar array combined with a 2.1MWh battery energy storage solution at an animal feed producer in the Western Cape. The solution was integrated with their existing back-up diesel generator.

Load shedding severely impacted their business leading to production losses, inconsistent product quality, wastage and revenue loss.

Interestingly, for our solution to operate optimally, we had to make changes to the existing operational set-up and as part of it we integrated variable speed drives on two of their large electrical motors and some other drives.

The battery solution supports operations during load-shedding and the solar installation minimizes usage of electricity from the grid while also charging the batteries. In case the grid outage is for a longer period than the batteries can support, the diesel generator kicks in to take over the load.

The client is happy about the quality of installation, operation of the solution and the high level of customer focus that Synthesis Power Solutions is giving. Although the plant still experiences issues, the renewable solution is functioning well and Synthesis will continue to assist with technical knowhow to achieve the ultimate operational efficiency.

Better still, the solution decreases their energy bill while ensuring a lower carbon footprint, sustainable production and increased revenue generation. That is exactly what a power solution should do.
